From Graduate to Partner: An Inspiring Medivet Journey
Here at Medivet, we champion our colleagues, always looking to share their empowering journeys where we can. Today, we sat down with Dr Kishan Vara, BSc MSc, BVetMed, MRCVS, to learn more about his veterinary journey from his early career right through to him becoming one of our Partners!
Read on for our Q&A with Dr Kishan Vara and be inspired with your own veterinary career journey.
Q: What attracted you to join Medivet, and how has your experience matched your expectations?
A: I completed most of my Extra Mural Studies (EMS) placements at various Medivet practices over the years, including my full 10-week placement at Pinner. From the outset, it was the people, team culture, and supportive environment that really attracted me to Medivet, particularly the team at Pinner.
Throughout my EMS placements, I felt genuinely supported and encouraged. The teams created a safe space where I could ask questions, build confidence, and develop my clinical skills without fear of judgement. That sense of support made a lasting impression on me.
Since joining Medivet, my experience has exceeded my expectations. The rate of growth I’ve achieved over the past year has been incredible and is a true reflection of the guidance, mentorship, and encouragement provided by my team.
Q: Can you share any insights into the training and onboarding process and how it prepared you for your role?
A: The onboarding process began with a week at Head Office, where we were introduced to Medivet’s culture, values, and the freedom available within the partnership model. We learned about the different partners across the group and the wide range of opportunities, which gave me a clear understanding of how my career could develop within Medivet.
The week also included valuable clinical teaching that I’ve been able to apply throughout my first year in practice, as well as a clear CPD schedule outlining the learning and development we would undertake over the year. This helped me feel organised and supported from the very start.
One of the most impactful aspects of my onboarding experience was working with the Vet Empowered team. They helped us reflect on our mental, emotional, and career goals, and provided tools to help manage workload and avoid burnout. That focus on wellbeing made a big difference and showed how much Medivet values its people.
Q: How would you describe the company culture at Medivet, and how has it supported your professional growth?
A: The company culture at Medivet has played a huge role in my career so far. It’s the reason I chose to complete so many weeks of EMS at Pinner and ultimately accepted a new graduate role there. For me, the team environment was the most important factor when choosing a role, especially knowing how influential the first 12 months are in shaping your career.
I’ve always felt supported, encouraged, and valued by my team, which has allowed me to grow with confidence. Medivet’s culture promotes learning through exposure, and I’ve benefited from a fantastic balance between day-to-day branch work and hospital exposure at weekends.
That breadth of experience, alongside consistent support and mentorship, has helped me grow into a more well-rounded and confident vet. The culture genuinely empowers you to learn, develop, and thrive early in your career.
Q: How does Medivet invest in employee development? Can you relate this to your development?
A: Medivet invests heavily in employee development from the very start of the new Graduate Programme.
During my first 12 months, a structured CPD programme was in place, which supported my learning and helped me build confidence across key areas of clinical practice.
Beyond the new graduate year, Medivet provides a dedicated CPD budget, allowing vets to explore areas they are particularly passionate about and develop specific skills in greater depth. This flexibility has been invaluable in helping me shape my own development pathway.
Alongside this, the clinical team regularly offers free CPD seminars, which I actively try to attend. These sessions are highly informative and cover a wide range of topics that are relevant to vets at all stages of their careers. I’ve found them incredibly useful in strengthening both my knowledge base and practical approach.
Q: Can you share a memorable moment that has shaped your career journey at Medivet?
A: One of the most defining moments of my career so far occurred while I was working sole charge in the clinic, when an emergency seizure case was brought in. The patient required induction into general anaesthesia to stabilise them, and it quickly became clear that this was a complex and unusual case.
In that high-pressure moment, I recognised the importance of seeking support and contacted Watford Hospital. Candice, the Partner, took the time to help me break the case down step by step. With her guidance, I was able to diagnose a rare case of polycythaemia and proceed with bloodletting, ultimately saving a young dog’s life.
That experience reinforced the strength of Medivet’s network and the reassurance that you’re never truly alone, even when working independently. Knowing there is always someone willing to support, advise, and share their expertise has been incredibly empowering and has had a lasting impact on my confidence as a vet.
What advice would you give to someone considering starting their career at Medivet?
Just go for it.
The best way to grow is by gaining experience, stepping outside your comfort zone, and embracing new challenges. Medivet provides the support and opportunities to do exactly that, helping you develop into a confident, well-rounded vet early in your career.
Anything else to add about your career journey at Medivet?
I’d also like to give a special thank you to Reena Patel, who has believed in me at every stage of my journey, from vet student through to working alongside branch partners. Her support, encouragement, and belief in my potential have played a huge role in how far I’ve come and how quickly I’ve been able to progress.
Having mentors like Reena who genuinely invest in your development makes a real difference, and it’s a great example of the supportive culture at Medivet that allows people to grow with confidence.
Frequently Asked Questions about Medivet’s Partnership
Do you have clinical autonomy as a Medivet Partner?
Yes, you are the Partner, and you can make the decisions as the clinic is your own. We pride ourselves on the high level of clinical care that all of our vets provide to our patients.
Can I work the hours I want to?
We expect full-time Partners to work 40 hours per week plus 1 in 6 weekend days at their local 24-hour Medivet. We do, however, have several part-time Partners who work a minimum of 33 hours per week.
Can I pay more than 10% of the business value to start off?
Of course! We just offer 10% to make it potentially more manageable to financially enter the partnership. You can pay as much as you’d like to; we just need the initial 10% as a minimum.
