Future Vets in the Making: University of Lancashire x Medivet's Summer School
At Medivet, we’re passionate about supporting the next generation of veterinary professionals. This is evident in our multi-year collaboration with the University of Lancashire, where we recently hosted our first-ever Vet Summer School.
Our week-long programme is aimed at strengthening the aspirations of young people from underrepresented backgrounds who want to study veterinary medicine and supporting them to progress into a veterinary career. The University of Lancashire welcomed 20 aspiring veterinary surgeons from diverse backgrounds, giving these students the chance to “try out” the profession.
Dr Rhian Littlehales, BSc(Hons) BVSc CertAVP PgCertVBM MRCVS, a Vet and Medivet’s Clinical Governance Director, said the programme is “determined to inspire the next generation of vets and break down barriers to this great profession” and “cannot wait to welcome students to our Medivet branches as we continue to support their journey to becoming veterinary professionals”.
A Week of Discovery and Growth
The young professionals who joined us took part in varied and immersive activities to build both technical skills and personal confidence. Some of the taster sessions we hosted included:
- Anatomy and clinical skills workshops
- Animal handling and canine confidence sessions
- Coaching and personal statement writing support
- Guest lectures and Q&A sessions
One of our personal highlights was when the students had the opportunity to lead a “reverse interview”. This saw them quiz Medivet colleagues and university staff. We really were blown away by their insight, curiosity, and knowledge.
The week concluded with a celebratory awards ceremony to mark the achievements of our participants and show them we truly recognise their potential.
Reflecting Our Values
Our collaboration with the University of Lancashire is about much more than a week of learning and activities. This collaboration embodies our culture and values.
We’re equally committed to our animals as we are to our people, and we’re always seeking opportunities for growth and development that extend across our network, from early careers through to our veterinary surgeons and branch partners.
Join a Community Built on Care
The success of our summer school with the University of Lancashire is just the beginning. We’re hopeful that this programme can become a regular part of how we inspire, support, and welcome the next generation of vets into our community!
Now that you know a bit more about the wider initiatives we get up to at Medivet, it’s time to browse our opportunities so you too can make a difference to our future veterinary professionals.
